Dartmoor Gliding News-Saturday 30th March 2019

High pressure is still firmly in charge. This is in equal parts a good and bad thing. It has brought settled weather with clear skies clear skies. Behind glass it was pleasant but on the airfield there was a definite chill in the northerly wind. The high pressure and coolish temperatures meant that the formation of thermals would be dificult or impossible. Also the high pressure has brought poor visibility with very hazy conditions further limiting the thermal possibilities.

Brentor Church almost invisible in the hazy conditions.
Not ones to be discouraged easily, there was a good number of members on the airfield with the privaye gliders outnumbering the club ones. Today's gris comprised The 2 K13's and a K8 from the club with the Open Cirrus, the Twin Astir, Astir CS and Zugvogel 3B from the private owners.

Twin Astir and K13 with a hazy background.
Phil and Ged in the Twin Astir desitined for another circuit
Today's visitor was Roberto who attended for a trial flight and enjoyed his time with us. The weather also encouraged long serving club member Trevor from his winter hibernation and he lost no time in getting some flying with Rick in the K13. Roger Green also turned up with his ASW20 in tow which has spent the winter on his driveway.

Roberto and me ready to launch
Try as we might we could not find much in the way of rising air and most flights were just circuits ( still good for training though ). By mid afternoon there still no sign of rising air when we received another visitor a GREMLIN. The ML2 winch started to loose power on a random basis. This was very similar to the issue which had put the ML1 winch offline earlier in the week. Possible fuel issues suspected.

Wooly hat and thick fleece. Perhaps Trevor doesn't realise that the winter is over
At this point it was decided to cease flying to allow Phil and Rick time to investigate the problems with  winches and allow the members plenty of time to put the gliders away and socialise before this evenings AGM.

The AGM was conducted efficiently and apart from accepting the accounts and listening to the various reports, Richard Roberts was reaffirmed as Chairman for another year and Ged Nevisky was re-elected to the committee.

A nice day.
