Dartmoor Gliding News-Wednesday 7th April 2021

With memories of wave flying over the Easter weekend, what if anything would today bring. The forecast gave a 10 knot northwesterly wind and rasp gave a very promising day with a 3 star rating. From the small group of assembled pilots three private aircraft were rigged. Rigging complete it was time to tow to the launch point, but the weather hadn’t read the forecast and a band of heavy drizzle had set in. Checking weather radars showed the rain would clear in about 30 minutes to be followed by a smaller band of rain. A socially distanced set of chairs was set up under cover to await for the rain to pass over.

Eventually the three rigged aircraft along with the club K8 were towed to the launch point.

Malcolm was volunteered to take the first launch in the K8 which lasted only 6 minutes. He then took a second launch for a flight of 28 minutes.

Andy Davey launched in the Zugvogel (HSH) for two flights. The second was for 22 minutes.

Steve Fletcher was next to  launch in the Open Cirrus (CGY).

Steve returned after 1 hour 13 minutes to claim flight of the day. He reported that once above 2000ft there was lift everywhere and no problem as log as you stayed high.

Phil Hardwick and I each had a flight in our Astir (FCJ). Phil managed a flight of 41 minutes. Gavin Short took the K8 for a couple of flights, the longest being 15 minutes. After working in the hangar with John Smith, Richard Roberts came to fly the K8 for a flight of 26 minutes.

Only eleven flights after the late start, but with the temperature falling and everybody feeling cold it was decided to end the days flying and de-rig and pack things away.

Thank you to everybody who were at the airfield today and contributed to a successful day.
