Dartmoor Gliding News - Sunday 24th May 2026

The hot spell continues, temperature forecast to be in the upper 20's°C and a light SE breeze under a blue sky all day. It would be a hot one so plenty of fluids and sun cream to get us through the day. First order of the day was some launch failure practices for both Richard Roberts and Chris Bryning in the back seat of the Twin Astir. Both learnt valuable lessons on how to handle the Twin Astir.

Chris ready for his first practice.
How far will he get?
Once completed the airfield returned to normal training flights and flying. Our first visitor Freya Porter had arrived with her family to watch on. After the necessary briefings she was settled into the front on a K13 ready for her first flight with Richard.

Chris took the first trainee, Misha Skochko for a series of three flights. Misha later had a couple more flights with me where he coped well with landing in the opposite direction after running out of height.

I flew with Aiden Hughes for his three training flights and he also flew a downwind landing after getting low. Well done Aiden.

Two more visitors came along to keep Richard busy. Thomas Maund was next and enjoyed two flights with Richard. Having really enjoyed his flights he vowed to return for some more.

Last visitor was Louise Franklin who enjoyed her experience flight with Richard.

We did have another visitor today. Retired Brentor vicar Greg Stanton. Greg remembered Richard as a young lad when he was one of the early members of the club.

Chris Bryning gave Dave Osment a check flight. Dave then added anothe couple of solo flights to his collection.

Dave off on another solo.
Returning junior Freddie Purkiss had a couple of check flights with me and then enjoyed a couple of flights in the K8. Our privateers Steve Fletcher (Open Cirrus), John Osment (Cirrus), Viktor Skochko (K6) and Ed Borlase (K6) all tried their luck in the benign conditions. Steve worked hard for a 15 minute flight. This looked like it would be flight of the day until the last flight of the day, when Ed Borlase managed 24 minutes to claim flight of the day.

After 34 flights we were all tired and ready to pack the toys away. Everybody got something out of the day. Thank you to all at the club working well in the heat.
