Dartmoor Gliding News - Sunday 9th April 2023

A moderate SSE wind forecast to increase as the day progressed probably explained the low turn out today. But those assembled agreed to give it a go. The winch was set up in the south east corner of the field so the winch driver would be in with a chance of getting the drogue chute back into the field after the launch.

First flight was a weather check flight to assess the launch and approach. I flew with Sean Westrope as ballast in the front of the K13. The launch was relatively smooth with little turbulence. No signs of any lift, we were soon on our downwind leg and a little turbulence could be felt (a sign of what was possibly ahead. After making our final turn we started our approach and I had to fight the turbulence all the way to the ground.

After talking to the assembled pilots, Sean said he didn't want to fly again as he wouldn't be able to handle the approach being early in learning this phase of the flight. The other pilots also were not bothered about flying having all flown on either Friday or Saturday.

The only pilot wanting to use the second cable was retuning member Freddie Colton. Freddie was back from university for easter and will be back for a longer spell of flying in the summer.

Freddie getting ready to fly again.
Freddie flew the top part of the launch and most of the circuit. Because Freddie hadn't flown for a while I took over for the approach and landing.

Thank you to the small group at the airfield today that allowed us to give it a go, but we put the toys away ready for better weather soon.
