The general forecast was for thundery showers but with things brightening up later. Shortly after I arrived the first downpour arrived at the club, so the kettle was put on to wait and see what would happen. After the shower had passed we were left with low clouds scudding across the airfield. So more tea, the simulator was fired up for those who wanted to use it. I worked through some of the introductory briefs to the club with new member Heidi Baines.
After several walks up to the airfield, the cloud base was going up and generally things looked brighter. A call to scramble the troops, we set about getting things ready to fly. First flight took off at 11:42 with Sean Westrope at the controls. Some buoyant air was found which extended the flight to 9 minutes.

A rather stormy looking sky. |
Our second flight went smoothly until the landing. Running out of rudder control, it was obvious we would be standing down to see if the wind would abate.

K13 CCY waiting. |
Another heavy thundery shower passed over us as we all settled down for lunch in the bus.

Thundery shower passing by. |
After more than a hour of waiting the wind was stubbornly staying due south 15knts gusting 20knts. We discussed the situation and with a couple of members saying they would have been leaving before the scheduled finish, we decided to call it a day and pack the toys away safely in the hangar. To tow the aircraft down the field a member was placed in the front seat to act as ballast for safety.

Although the sky was looking favourable, it was the wind strength and direction that ended the day.

Thank you to all at the club, particularly all that were unable to fly (you know who you are).
