Dartmoor Gliding News - Sunday 18th August 2024

A dry day with a moderate breeze straight down the strip, but only little chance of soarable conditions, would hopefully provide a reasonable days flying. Three visitors booked in and one friend and family would also keep the BI's busy.

First trainee to fly with me was Freddie Purkiss. The first flight included a demonstration of the zig-zag circuit to improve his judgment.

Next to fly with me was Julia Old. Julia continues to hone her general flying skills on her road back to solo.

Phil Hardwick's nephew, Johnny Rowling, came to see what his uncle gets up to. They took a flight in the Puchacz and later another flight in Phil's twin Astir.

Duty IFP Steve Fletcher greeted his first visitors. Brothers Oliver and Archie Marley. Watched on by their family, both enjoyed their flights including an extended soaring flight each.

Training continued with father and son returnees, John & David Osment. David is starting his flying career and starting to get used to controlling the glider.

The final trainees were returning Toby Irons after a few weeks away and Viktor Skochko.
Steve's final visitor arrived. Ben Reid enjoyed three short flights.

For the final flight of the day I took Toby's mum Sarah for a flight and hangar landing. Some tight turns introduced her to positive g which she enjoyed.

Thank you to all at the club today. The forecast was reasonably accurate with little soaring. The longest flight was 22 minutes by Steve with one of our visitors. After all the toys were put away it was time to retire to the clubhouse to enjoy a beer and chat for my birthday.
