Dartmoor Gliding News - Sunday 1st September 2024 - Day 3 DSGC Expedition To Dartmoor

DSGC Day 3 at Brentor was greeted with low cloud and some early morning drizzle. The forecast gave a slow clearance with a light easterly breeze. When the clearance arrived flying commenced and David Moorley took to the air with me.

David's view of the cloud hugging the tops of the tors.
DSGC visitors Andrew Broderick, Chris Woodward and Lily Sanders-Page would take turns in the K21 with Peter Smith and also experience the K13 with Mike Sloggett.

Andrew with Mike in the K13.
Paul Medlock was keen to experience our Astir 77. After reading the flight manual and receiving a briefing he enjoyed three flights throughout the day.

Paul set for his conversion flight.
Duty Bi Gavin Short had three visitors today. First up was Aiden Hughes. Aidan 12 yro accompanied by Mum and Dad.  They hail from Meavy.  He is at secondary school in Ivybridge.  Loves PE the best subject and keeping fit. He enjoyed two flights.

Aiden with Gavin.
Next to fly with Gavin were Kate and Phil Worth. Kate and Phil live in Dousland.  Kate is the housekeeper for Lord (and Lady) Roborough.  Phil conducts ground works on domestic properties and was able to spot some of the properties that he had worked on, during our flights.  One of their sons and family came to watch them fly. Kate was quite nervous.  She did the first flight but wanted to stick at that. Phil's second flight was only 5 minutes long, so I offered another flight. However, they were under time pressure to make a delivery in Plymouth and so had to leave.

Phil all set. (sorry no picture of Kate).
Training continued with David & John Osment, Elliot Flannery and Freddie Purkiss. David was getting to grips with coordinated turns. John  refreshing memories of stalls. Elliot general handling after a short break. Freddie finally finessing the ground run and transition in the launch.

A great weekend flying with our friends from DSGC ended with the K21 packed away in the trailer ready for the trip back to North Hill. The increasingly poor visibility ended flying and the toys were packed away.

Thank you to Phil and Ed sharing the winching today, particulaly Phil who didn't fly.
