Dartmoor Gliding News - Sunday 11th September 2022

A moderate SSE wind would give pilots a good chance to practice cross wind approaches and landings. Along with a little turbulence caused by the trees on the southern boundary it looks like autumnal flying conditions are on the way. Two K13's and the K8 were DI'd and taken to the west end launch point.

After the morning briefing in the clubhouse with teas and coffees it was time to start flying. First to fly with me was Peter Hamilton. Peter is working hard to improve general consistency with his flying and improving circuit planning. Keep up the good work Peter.

Our first visitor James Jago arrived. Phil Hardwick and Scratch (Dene Hitchen) decided to share the air experience flights. James flew with Scratch and enjoyed all his flights.

James receiving his certificate.
Next to fly with me was Yiannis Houlis. With only a few flights under his belt exploring the primary effects of controls it was time to move on to coordinating the controls and turning the glider. Doing well with this I allowed him to fly around the circuit being prompted when to turn and to also increase the speed as required. Keep up the good progress.

The second visitor arrived with a rather large extended family. It was Phil Hardwick's turn to fly with William Harris.

William and all the family receiving his certificate.
Next to fly with me was Freddie Colton. Freddie will soon be departing to start his university course, but hopes to return during the holiday breaks. A launch failure and two good flights coping well with the conditions. One flight had the ASI covered up after I thought he was watching it too much and resulted in a much better controlled last flight.

Freddie off on another flight.
K8 pilots Ed Borlase and Adam Hoskin both managed extended circuits in weak thermal activity. The longest of which was 19 minutes by Ed.

K8 returns.

And north.
Last to fly with me was Ella Barlow. Ella is also early in her flying training and made good progress flying coordinated turns and speed control.

Thank you to all at the airfield today for keeping things going although experienced numbers were low.

Peter Howarth
