Dartmoor Gliding News - Sunday 3rd June 2024

The forecast gave a light north-easterly breeze with long periods of sun. The only question was would the wind back north-westerly which depending on which forecast you studied may or may not happen. So we set up to fly from the west end with two K13's and four private aircraft.

A slight change to the flying list gave me chance to brief and carry out a couple of launch failures with Toby Irons so as not to interfere with the launches later in the day. These were Toby's first experiences of launch failures and were well handled.

Next into the front seat was junior Jamie Young. Three flights saw Jamie progress with turns and general flying. Our first visitor arrived to fly with duty IFP Steve Fletcher. Matthew Stephenson had three short flights and enjoyed his time with us.

Next to arrive was Lyn Harrison from Tavistock. Lyn had been given her flight voucher as a birthday present from husband Neil.

Steve's final visitor was 14 year old Samuel McCallien. Samuel enjoyed a 14 minute flight.

Next to fly with me was returning temporary member Debbie Bailey. Debbie's flights were used for her to start getting used to the primary effects of controls. Following on was junior Freddie Purkiss. A little previous experience with the ATC saw him able to fly the glider well resulting in 13 and 25 minute flights.

Today saw a brace of Libelles and a brace of K6's at the launch point. Andy Davey's Libelle JEU was joined by Sean Westrope's Libelle CLM. Although Sean had converted to the Libelle at Aston Down, today was the first flights at Brentor. Sean enjoyed 13 and 51 minute flights.

The K6's were flown by Adam Hoskin (BVR Woody) and Ed Borlase (EWO). After a couple of shorter flights Adam got away for a 54 minute flight. Ed Borlase managed 1 hour 22 minutes.

Part way through the afternoon the wind did back as forecast so we had to change ends to continue flying to the end. After his earlier launch failures Toby enjoyed a 16 minute soaring flight. David Moult also enjoyed two circuits with me continuing his progress. After a long day Val Kiely joined me for a hangar flight.

Onwards and upwards.
Flight of the day went to Andy Davey in Libelle JEU. 3 hour 27 minutes flying around the local area. A big thank you to all today with a smoothly run field. A particular big thank you to Phil Hardwick who did a long afternoon stint on the winch and didn't fly.
