Dartmoor Gliding News - Monday 6th May 2024

With it being a bank holiday Monday the club was open for flying and for once the weather seemed to be playing ball. A fine day with a light wind and a possible three star rasp soaring forecast brought solo pilots out. There was a lot of activity in the rigging area and initially with no trainees the club aircraft were left in the hangar.

A busy rigging area.
After two trainees arrived the K13 and Astir were extracted from the hangar. Following the daily briefing by DI Rick Wiles all aircraft slowly made their way to the east end launch point. Val Keily was first to fly with Rick and managed to complete her first complete launch. Well done Val. Next into the front seat was Viktor Skochko who continued his training experiencing his first stalls to recognise stall symptoms.

Following his first short flight, Andy Davey was sitting having a sandwich and noticed an unusual phenomena. A small lenticular had formed near the top of a cumulus cloud.

The solo pilots took turns launching with varying degrees of success. Andy Davey (Libelle), Steve Fletcher (Open Cirrus), Phil Hardwick (DG300), Mike Bennett (Astir), Adam Hoskin (K6), Peter Howarth (Kestrel) and Ed Borlase (K6). Flight of the day was claimed by Andy with 2 hour 9 minutes. After completing the training flights Rick Wiles managed a couple of flights in his Standard Cirrus.

After a couple of test flights of K6 HEB by me, Dave Archer was cleared to fly his K6 again and was glad to get to the top of the launch.

Colin Boyd arrived at the launch point after working on the K8 and decided to take a flight with me for the first time in 8 months.

Thanks to all at the airfield today. 31 launches and some good flying although not quite as good as the initial forecast.
